子供の頃、面白半分で障害者のマネしたことがあった。
それがどれほどに当事者の心を傷つけたか、痛いほど思い知る大人になった。
正直に言えば、今はなるべくそ知らぬふりを装う世知を身につけてしまった。偽善ではないが、関わることを避けているのだから、褒められた行為ではないと思う。
子供は無邪気なぶんだけ残酷だ。
そんな場面を漫然と見過ごしてはいけないのだと思った。
やはり、相手の立場に立てる感受性があるかどうかが問われるのだろう。そんな場面は日常生活で予告もなく訪れるので、その都度思い知らされる。
しかしおとなになっても、人の心を平然と傷つける人物がいるのには、流石に驚かされる。
そして、その振る舞いがなんと、国家の最高指導者を選ぶ局面で白昼堂々と演じられたらしい。２０１５年１１月のことだという。
これは黙って見過ごせない、とする精神がハリウッドで健在なことを心に留めておきたいと思う。
１月８日夜、ゴルデン・グローブ賞でのメリル・ストリープさんの堂々たるスピーチ原文を以下に引用したい。
豪華な夢の舞台に彼女が登壇するとき、映画「Mamma Mia！」の華やかなテーマソングが流れていた。
“Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you. Please sit down. Please sit down. Thank you. I love you all. You’ll have to forgive me. I’ve lost my voice in screaming and lamentation this weekend. And I have lost my mind sometime earlier this year. So I have to read.
声が枯れていることと心を喪失していることの原因は、もひとつはっりしないが、対立する大統領の就任式が間近であることと無関係ではないのだろう。
彼女は用意したペーパーをみた。かなり周到な準備をしたスピーチのように思う。
Thank you, Hollywood foreign press. Just to pick up on what Hugh Laurie said. You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now.
今、アメリカではゴールデン・ブローグ賞に集まれるようなハリウッドのセレブたちへの風当たりがきついようだ。
Think about it. Hollywood, foreigners, and the press. But who are we? And, you know, what is Hollywood anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places.
彼女は、ハリウッドとはそもそも何かという原点を振り返った。

Sarah Paulson was raised by a single mom in Brooklyn. Sarah Jessica Parker was one of seven or eight kids from Ohio. Amy Adams was born in Italy. Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem. Where are their birth certificates? And the beautiful Ruth Negga was born in Ethiopia, raised in — no, in Ireland, I do believe. And she’s here nominated for playing a small town girl from Virginia. Ryan Gosling, like all the nicest people, is Canadian. And Dev Patel was born in Kenya, raised in London, is here for playing an Indian raised in Tasmania.Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick ‘em all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.
ハリウッドは実に様々な来歴や境遇の人々の集まりなのだ。その多様性を排除したらフットボールと格闘技しかなくなり、それはもはや芸術とはいえなくなってしまう。
ここで聴衆の拍手喝采が会場に響いた。
They gave me three seconds to say this.
An actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that, breathtaking, passionate work.
俳優の仕事は、自分とは違う人の人生に入っていってそれがどのようなものなのかをお客に感じさせることなのだと述べている。その意味で、この１年(２０１６年)間、まさに力強い、共感性のある作品がハリウッドで生まれた。
There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.
It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.

こう述べたとき、心なしかストリープさんは声が途切れて涙目にさえ見える。
ストリープさんは名指しこそしていないが、この「演技」は２０１５年１１月の大統領選挙戦での陣営の集会で、トランプ氏が演じた恥ずべき行為。たちまちマスコミから非難の声が上がった。そしてヒラリー陣営がそれをテレビのネガティブ・キャンペーンとして利用したようだ。子供の教育に悪いという趣旨だったと思う。メリル・ストリープさんは熱心にヒラリー候補の応援をしていた。
And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.
こんな侮辱が衆目の中で権力者に演じられれば、そういう行為はお墨付きを得てたちまち蔓延してしまう。侮蔑は侮蔑を招き、暴力は暴力を呼びます。しかし権力者にいじめられたら、私達は負けてしまう。
ここが彼女の主張の中核部分だと思う。この言葉は記憶されるべきだろう。
This brings me to the press. We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage.That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution. So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the committee to protect journalists. Because we’re going to need them going forward. And they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.
ここで一転して、彼女は権力を監視して批判する信念あるマスコミの大切さを指摘。だからこそアメリカ建国の父たちが憲法に報道の自由を導入したのだと述べて参加者にジャーナリズムの守護への協力を依頼した。ジャーナリズムが真実を護るためにはハリウッドの応援が必要なのだ、と。
ゴルデン・グローブ賞はハリウッド外国人映画記者協会の会員の投票により選定される。
One more thing. Once when I was standing around on the set one day whining about something, we were going to work through supper, or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor. Yeah, it is. And we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be very proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.
きつい仕事だけど、俳優であることへの感謝の思いを友人の言葉を引用して述べた。

最後に、最近亡くなった『スター・ウォーズ』レイア姫役のキャリー・フィッシャーさんの言葉で閉めた。
いわく
「傷んだ心を芸術に昇華しよう！」
つまり、話の大筋としては自分を推薦してくれた「外国人記者クラブ」「Committee to Protect Jounarists」への支援依頼なのだが、次期大統領対ジャーナリズムの戦いに女優メリル・ストリープさんが「参戦」しか格好だ。すごく雄弁なので、かなり推敲されたのだろうと思う。合衆国憲法を引用して建国の理念を訴えた。立派なスピーチだと思う。
実際のところ、彼女の受賞スピーチがこのイベントの趣旨がにふさわしいのかどうか、私にはわからない。大統領選挙そのものを論ずる能力もない。
また、ハリウッドのセレブがお定まりの批判を「上から目線」で重ねるほどに、却ってトランプ支持者の反発を勢いづかせるだけだという鋭い批判もあるようだ。
なにかしら「マッカーシー時代」のような既視感が湧くが、今起きていることは、その数倍以上の規模の影響を世界に与えるような予感がする。
これに対して、トランプ氏のツイート反応は素早かった。
